dear Mr. Kramer:
Reading your column was in some ways like reading my own biography. For years i chased the imaginary dream of heightened consciousness through chemical stimulus. It's a lie, and a sinister one at that. The only way to grow and mature is to cast those distractions aside and deal with yourself. I am more fully in control of my manic depression and have more respect for myself than i have ever had because i can deal with life on a daily basis and i have to come to fully realize who i am and what i need to be happy. i can pursue those goals with a sense of purpose that just wasn't possible when i was self medicating with alcohol and marijuana, and my sense of creativity has never felt more fully developed. i wish you luck in all your pursuits and pray that you never forget the hard fought lessons you have learned. i also have praise for your wife who stood by you through your personal crises. i wish i had been able to find a woman of such character, but such is life.

Congratulations, David. For days when you feel like crap, here's a screen capture of you on the front page of the NY Times, right next to Obama.

Mr. Kramer, great article, and as we say in meetings, "thanks for sharing".
That said, many of the comments on your article were the usual, typical blah, blah, blah...psycho-social junk.
I don't care how you got sober, I don't care what your motivations are, it's none of my business how you got to where you are now.
I'm glad for you and wish you continued success in whatever it takes to keep you in a good place for you and your health.
I like your blog, I've bookmarked it.

Hi David,

Stumbled across your post in the Times on line last night. Crazy, with all the references to intoxicants in your work I never marked you as dependent or really struggling with it. But you were, as many of are, in our own quite ways. You really nail it when you talk about smoking because it is not so much about intoxication as it is about the freedom to consume -- like we are trying to fill some gap by eating and drinking and smoking like there will be no tomorrow. I quit smoking 4 times before I laid it to rest for good. I would never again take even a single puff for fear that it would send me over the edge and I haven't smoked since 1991. I don't understand the connection between happiness (or unhappiness) and the desire to consume. Wish I did. Good luck. Gordon
